World’s First AI-Powered Swarm Robots for Suspended Ceiling Construction※1

Transforming Interior Buildouts with Edge AI and Multi-Robot Coordination

tmsuk Co., Ltd., a Japanese robotics pioneer based in Kyoto, in collaboration with Kajima Corporation, has developed the world’s first robotic system designed to automate the construction of suspended ceilings in office buildings.

This cutting-edge system utilizes multiple compact robots that collaborate as a “swarm” using edge AI, enabling them to handle various phases of suspended ceiling construction -from installing hanging bolts and assembling T-bars to positioning ceiling boards. This marks a significant advancement in automating interior construction tasks with precision and scalability.

※1 Note: Humans are still involved in certain tasks, such as edge work and specific parts of the construction process.

<Key Highlights>

  • Edge AI & Swarm Robotics

Each robot is equipped with edge-based artificial intelligence, allowing for real-time task coordination and environmental awareness. Together, they execute complex ceiling construction workflows autonomously and efficiently.

  • Flexible & Scalable Development

The modular, compact design allows robots to adapt to site conditions, including narrow or restricted spaces. Robots can be transported via standard elevators and deployed selectively based on construction needs.

  • Field-Poven Performance

The prototype system has already been successfully tested on multiple active office construction sites managed by Kajima Corporation in Japan.

Robot System Overview

①    Hanging Bolt Installation Robot ②    T-Bar Assembly Robots (3 units) ③    Secondary T-Bar Robot

④    Ceiling Board Installation Robot
Install bolts that suspend the ceiling, identifying obstructions like beams or ducts and adjusting placement accordingly.

Collaboratively transport and fix long T-bars, sharing location data to perform precise alignment and connection.  Install mid- and short-length T-bars to complete the ceiling grid structure. Places ceiling panels onto the completed grid, using sensors to detect obstacles and fine-tune positioning.

Mobile Platform (All Robots)
Each unit moves on a motorized platform capable of millimeter-level adjustments, essential for high precision interior work.

Practical Advantages

  • Significantly reduces scaffolding needs in work zones.
  • Enhances worksite safety and productivity.
  • Adaptable to phased or partial construction workflows.
  • Supports a future vision of human-robot collaboration in interior construction.
